Laptop Backpack Guide – Choosing Laptop Backpack Or Bag For Safe Transport

If you own a laptop and you enjoy taking it to your favorite wireless hot spot, if you’re a busy student, commuter, or you’re just on-the-go a lot, you should have a safe, convenient means of transporting your computer.  A laptop backpack is a great solution.  Knowing what to look for when purchasing a laptop backpack can help you select the best one for your needs.

The size of your laptop backpack is a major factor.  Obviously, you don’t want the backpack’s laptop compartment to be too small, but if the compartment is too large, your laptop will not securely stay in place and you increase the risk of damage during transport.  The overall size of the backpack is also important to consider for the sake of your own comfort when it’s being worn or carried.  Make sure you measure the length, width and depth/height of your laptop when it’s closed and shop according to those specific dimensions.  Don’t forget to consider the size of your adaptor and any other separate devices you like to carry with you.

A quality laptop backpack will include sufficient padding to protect the laptop.  Too little padding means the laptop can become damaged from the outside or by any items inside, such as books or other electronic devises.  Too much padding can be a comfort issue when the backpack is worn.

There are a wide variety of storage options in laptop backpacks.  Some provide the bare minimum of compartments to contain the laptop and the adaptor, while others feature numerous pockets and separate compartments.  If you have a good sense of how much you’ll be carrying on a regular basis, you can use that to determine the extent of storage you’ll require.  Remember, if you are carrying multiple items, you want to ensure they will not damage the laptop during transport.  You also want to be cautious not underestimate the quantity or size of additional items you’re carrying.  An overstuffed backpack can not only damage your laptop from the inside, it can cause zipper closures or Velcro fasters to loose function, and the contents of your backpack could go crashing to the ground.

If you are trying to decide between a laptop backpack and a laptop shoulder bag, you should consider how you travel and your preferred appearance.  On the surface, students, or those travelers entering a more casual environment may choose a backpack, while professional travelers may find a laptop shoulder bag more complimentary to traditional business attire.  You also want to consider the wearing position of a laptop backpack as opposed to a shoulder bag.  If you’re riding a bike to and from your destination, a backpack is the better option, as your laptop will be securely on your back and not interfering with your ride.  If you’re traveling by mass transit, a shoulder bag, held close to the body is typically more secure and out of the way of fellow commuters.  Choosing a shoulder bag or a backpack is also a matter of personal preference and daily routine.   Also consider what else you’ll be carrying.  Will you also be wearing a purse or toting a briefcase?  Consider where and how you carry these items to ensure that won’t conflict with your laptop transport.

If you insist on always being in reach of your laptop, now matter where you’re going or how you get there, you may want to invest in one of each option.  Having either choice will ensure that you can conveniently transport and protect your laptop no matter how you decide to carry it.
